Our Family History

Descendants of Bartlett and Rhoeana Flemister, Thomas Jefferson, and Julie Flemister Baulding whose tireless efforts to build strong and useful lives pleasing in the sight of the almighty God, have been regarding by the fruitfulness of this great progeny for generations, representing contributions to humanity in many, many fields.

Bartlett Flemister was born a slave on August 13, 1835 (the Georgia Department of Archives & History, Atlanta, GA list his birth as 1831, his Tombstone, 1835) on a plantation in Virginia, which was owned by a

Dr. Sweet. When asked by his children about his parentage, his notable quip was “I was born in Madagascar, a Chinaman was my pappy.“

 

Bartlett married Rhoeana Beckoms in 1850. She was born on May 20, 1837. To them was born twenty children, ten boys and ten girls. Nine of their children were born in Virginia. They also reared seven foster children.
